Whats in a word ?
While I was watching Crash , I noticed that the intensity of the situation was directly proportional to the number of expletives used .Every time theres a crucial "tense up people..great things are afoot " moment..the frequency of the F word goes up a couple of notches . The same phenomenon followed with Snatch .
So as is my compulsion....I googled it .[yes..for once I'm talking facts ;)]
I find that "Crash contains more profanity than any other film nominated for the best picture Oscar over the prior five years with 182 expletives, 99 of which are "fuck," according to a report by Family Media Guide.The only Best Pictures with more expletives are Platoon and Deer Hunter. " Now thats straight from wikipedia..Am I allowed to do that?
And in Snatch it is said 153 times . You might want to tell me.."So what? Its the norm..whats the big deal ?" I realize that..check this out . The point is not to tell you what a prude I am or any such...The point is [You didnt think there was one ,did you ? ;-l ] that I wonder how the movies would sound without the expletives.
#Graham: F you very much. Thanks for thinking of me.
This one goes right down the drain .
#Mickey: Why the F do I want a caravan that's got no Eff-ing wheels? You want to settle this with a fight?
Why do I want a caravan thats got no wheels ? [Or why the hell do I want a caravan ?]You want to settle this with a fight?
See what I mean ? Takes the wind right out.
So would they be able to create the same situational tension ?Will they convey the same intensity ? In short..would moviemakers be seriously handicapped if not for the F word ?
One word ..and Hollywood is crippled ! And what about real life ?

Yeah, movies, music, both swear a lot, cuss if you will. While I do think that in some cases it is necessary, at times it enhances a character or even a joke. But I still think that most times it's cutting corners. Why, you may ask? Every time someone swears, that is a time when they aren't being creative enough to think of something *better*!
this is one discussion that always comes up with pals...
The F word should be given a special stature...
it has been used in all contexts...a verb adverb adjectiv noun pronoun..u name it...it can be used in any way...
so much so that we came up with a new category called...VERSATILE...there is no other word can fit in as many ways as this one does...
well i surely missed using it in my college days...cos i studied in a land where this was something used in english movies where ppl thought this word that had to be used to comeplete or start a sentence..:P
@182 times
btw..if i am not wrong thsi was the exact fact that caught my eye when i reead abt it in wiki...
the record for avg max usage shud be given to Tranatino...and if ma not wrong..Reservoir dogs has this word being used some 220 odd times...
can help abt real life, one expression can say a thousand words!
but then again, the movie also has people with lots of acting expertise, they shoudl theoritically be able to express everything that can happen in real life
so i draw this conclusion, may be the actors are not just good enough?
no wonder telugu movies are such a bore :D bad actors combined with no 'd' word :p
why do ppl consider the f word more benevolent than the d word :O. i protest again :p
@ari ! What can I say?that is JUST what i was trying to convey .I can erase my post n paste this comment there I tell u!
@srini :
This must be the one word everyone has excercised their poetic license to the hilt with ! After a while plain jane F mustve stopped packing the punch ..sprouting variations then on .I agree it dusnt depend on how u use it and when....its versatile..but it certainly depends on who is using it..Some people just come off sounding so lame !
@freaky : I have no clue what the D word is..[and not asking ]but I trust you know what u r talking bout here ;)
And not ALL telugu movies are bad !Like when there is M.B in it ?
oh the 'd' word is the telugu equivalent of the 'f' word, i thought ud know!!
anyways if ur wondering who i am, me is freak-y this is my other id. has 3 blogs under this one :d other than the 4 at freaky :p
@The Creative gaps..
reminds of Joey's blank facial expressions he explains in the "Days of our Lives"...he uses this wired expression when he forgets what he has to say...
maybe the scriptwriters idea of filling those gaps is the F lettered word...it sure does not fll in good taste all the time...
and by stopping them from using that...well i guess u create more vulgarity...like what happens in telugu films...u come up with more lewd analogies..
Great thoughts... I guess the same applies to violence... Wouldn't it be interesting to make a great movie without any violence and shocking images at least once in a while?
